Title: Flavor-specific scalar mediators

Abstract
Relatively light new scalar bosons play a role in a range of models that extend the Standard Model (SM) by a dark sector. To evade stringent flavor bounds, it is often assumed that the couplings of such scalars follow the Minimal Flavor Violation hypothesis, which implies that they dominant couple to the third generation of SM fermions. However, it is possible to relax this assumption and consider scalars that primarily couple to only one first- or second-generation fermion. This broader framework is shown to be still consistent with flavor constraints and technical naturalness. As specific examples, the phenomenology of two cases will be discussed in detail: (a) a muon-specific scalar that may account for the discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment; and (b) an up-specific scalar that may serve as a dark matter mediator.
