Title: Of Hierarchies and Symmetries: Decoding the Pattern behind (and beyond) the Standard Model

Abstract

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics describes very accurately the basic constituents of matter and their interactions. However, it lacks an explanation of what is behind the peculiar pattern of input parameters it relies on. Moreover, it cannot address phenomena like Dark Matter (DM) and the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. Understanding the hierarchies and symmetries that nature exhibits plays a crucial role in figuring out what lies behind and beyond the SM. Besides a description of the puzzles and shortcomings of the SM, including the gauge hierarchy problem, the flavor puzzle, (grand) unification, DM, and the strong CP problem, novel approaches to address them and their resulting signatures will be discussed.
