Title: The SM Effective Field Theory & Indirect searches for new physics at the LHC

Abstract
There are two main ways to probe physics beyond the Standard Model at the LHC: either directly, looking for new resonances, or indirectly, i.e. trying to identify deviations from the SM predictions that are likely induced by some new sector. Indirect searches will play an increasingly significant role in the next decade, due to the large statistics to be collected, and they will be of greatest importance if the absence of direct discoveries persists. The best theoretical tool for these studies are Effective Field Theories: in this talk I will give an introduction to the most popular EFT, the so-called Standard Model EFT, and I'll describe with some practical examples how this framework can allow to extract information from data in a general and systematic way.
