Quantum transport with cold atoms in periodic optical lattices

Cold or ultracold atoms loaded into optical lattices open a new arena for the experimental investigation of quantum transport phenomena in spatially periodic potentials. Possibly amended by particle-particle interactions and decoherence, external perturbations such as static and/or time periodic fields modify theoretically well understood dynamical phenomena such as dynamical localization and quantum resonances in surprising ways. Our current research in this field is strongly inspired and guided by ongoing experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates at Pisa and Tokyo, respectively.
