Particle Theory and AI

Greetings from the Heidelberg ITP, the most beautiful theoretical physics institute in Germany and beyond and a great place to combine theoretical physics with AI, hence AITP.

If I am not playing bass trombone in the Mannheim University bigband or Heidelberg’s Galapagos bigband, I am working on theoretical physics. Trained in LHC physics beyond the Standard Model, I went through a Higgs physics phase before modern machine learning hit me and my group in 2016/17. Since then we have been developing a theoretical physics approach to scientific AI. While the term scientific AI sounds great on websites, most of our work is really best described by modern machine learning for scientific and statistically demanding applications.

You can find all my publications on INSPIRE-HEP and on Google Scholar. As a physics group, we are writing refereed physics papers and only rarely target ML conferences. Our standard journal is SciPost – a journal made by scientists for scientists, open access, cheap, and with a nice impact factor. Anyone who wants to know how I ended up at the ITP, have a look at my short CV.

Everyone interested in our kind of ML-driven theoretical physics research, just call me, come by, catch me if you can. And because I am just one member of a big research group, please also talk to our great team of postdocs, graduate students, and research students.
